Skakavac Waterfall

The area of the waterfall “Skakavac” is located in the eastern part of Central Bosnia, and northeast of Sarajevo-Zenica basin, and Sarajevo valley.


It is located in the northern part of Canton Sarajevo, taking into count, southern slopes of Ozren, top and north slope of Bukovik, and total territory it covers are four administrative municipalities: Old Town, Center, Vogošća and Ilijaš, totally 1620.44 ha.

From the north, east and south side is bordered by the higher relief which rises over 1500 m above sea level.

Bukovik 1532 m.a.s.l, and Rašljevo hill with 1492 m.a.s.l. in the southeast, Vranje rocks 1401 m.a.s.l. in the east, the rocks with Nebešinom 1410 m above sea level in the north and Uževice on the west. 

Space formed by the peaks of Ozren (1453), Crni Vrh (1503), Crepoljsko (1525) and Bukovika (1532), form part of the continental Dinaric Alps and the highest mountain peaks going from Pannonia.

 

Hydrogeomorfologic characteristics are, high floral and faunal values, very high level of biodiversity, a high level of endemic plants, funghi and animals, as well as the relatively high number of threatened species, and high lifetime value of ecosystem and landscape features of the waterfall are indicate the need of its long-term conservation, protection and improvement of existing facilities.

At this area, in existence there are around 1500 of high plants, as well a high percentage of endemic character.

In this area are dominated spruce – fir forests, Abieti Piceetum Illyricum and beech – fir forests with spruce, Abieti – Fagetum Illyricum.

 

On the expressive slopes on shallow calcareous soils in the vicinity of the falls, have been developed thermophilic forests and thickets of red elm and autumn šašike, Seslerio autumnalis-Ostryetum carpinifoliae and red elm and black ash-Orno Ostryetum carpinifoliae.

On the rocks around the waterfall develops a vegetation rich with endemic species such as: Edrianthus jugoslavicus, Crepis cinarica, Dianthus kitaibelii, , Sesleria angustifolia, Daphne alpina, Atamatha cretensis, Moehringia bavarica, Potentilla persicina, etc.

This area is very rich with different kind of mushroom, in majority healthy and eatable.

 

Regarding the hydro-characteristc aspect observed area is very rich with numerous springs, creeks, plunges, etc, whose hydrogeological base is Perački creek.


The biggest value to this area is, of course contributed by the Skakavac waterfall, with its height of 98 m, what makes it the biggest in B&H.

From the top, the view is magnificent, so any way of getting there (hiking, biking, car, etc), is going to make you feel it was worth it.


All these things, facts mentioned above make the Skakavac Waterfall one of the must-see touristical attraction, especially as it is considered a day hiking tour.


NOTE: Keep in mind, that the area rarely experienced big battles during the recent siege of Sarajevo, so NO mines or mine fields are to be found there.
