Duplex/10m2

"Art is what makes life more interesting that art."
Robert Filliou

The Duplex is a contemporary arts centre with international perspective. It is essentially dedicated to the creations of young artists and managed by artists, for artists and for their audience. The place is set in Stakleni Grad, downtown Sarajevo, between Mula Mustafe Baseskije street and the Ferhadija pedestrian street.

The Duplex is approximately 150m2 and has two floors.

The Duplex is a venue of the DADADA NGO, a non-profit, a-political organisation which was created in Paris in September 2008. DADADA also manages the Sarajevo Galerija 10m2 (created in 2004), as well as its first branch, the Zagreb Galerija 10m2(created in 2007), and soon to come, the Belgrade branch.

The Duplex is dedicated to exhibiting and promoting artistic projects that spring from a variety of media (sculpture, painting, drawing, video, installation, sound, photography, performance, books, etc.), and that are carried by innovative artists from Sarajevo, the Balkans, and the international stage.

Twice a year, the Duplex presents the first exhibition of a young Bosnian artist. It gives carte blanche to guest curators, organises monographic, collective and thematic exhibitions, as well as specific projects and public interventions related to other artistic activities such as theatre, music and dance.

The Duplex hosts exhibitions that confront regional, national and international creation. It is building a documentation resource on contemporary art (research on artistic creation, history and theory of contemporary art) and has a strong editorial policy (first and foremost, exhibition catalogues), as well as a policy aimed at sensitising audiences (communication and pedagogical workshops). It also carries out mediation activities that accompany exhibitions, and manages cultural and social projects in the heart of the local community.

The Duplex also aims at accompanying young artists in developing their professional careers: introducing them to commercial galleries, presenting their work at contemporary art fairs, integrating them to the internation art networks. It connects and brings together the various actors of the contemporary art scene – artists essentially – from various backgrounds and with different approaches, giving the impetus for new projects and staging a platform for these energies to meet and connect. The goal is also to give art classes to very young members of the local community and to give them a sense for contemporary art.

The Duplex also develops numerous “relocated” events with its partners in France, Germany, Poland and elsewhere in Europe, dependi ng on the opportunities that open up.

The Duplex is a living space, it is open, flexible and committed to exploration and discovery.

Behind each representation, there is an underlying uncertainty, that of not having chosen the right scenario. Or to be more specific, there lies the idea that our lives are only worth living if we accept our dreams and choose to thrust ourselves, once and for all, into the exhuberance and contradictions of our time.
