Sarajevo War Theater SARTR was founded on 17th May 1992, on the initiative of producers Dubravko Bibianović, Gradimir Gojer, engineer George Kitty and writer Safet Plakalo, and it also gathered actors and other participants from three professional Sarajevo theaters who, due to the aggression on Bosnia and Herzegovina had to suspend their work.
In August of 1992, SARTR was constituted as a military unit at the Regional Headquarters of the Amry forces of B&H Sarajevo, and on the 12 of January 1993, by the decision of the War Presidency of the Assembly of Sarajevo as a public institution in the field of culture, of the particular interst to the defense of the city.
Decision of the Sarajevo Canton Assembly of 24 of July 1997, the role of the founder of SARTR took Canton Sarajevo. In 2003, Sarajevo War Theater SARTR won the Šestoaprilsku award of the city of Sarajevo. That year SARTRs Čežnja i Smrt, by the Sylviae Plath was winner of the festival “Ex Ponto” in Ljubljana, and the the award “Ključ tmače”, declared the best performace of the overall Bosnian theatrical productions.
Furthermore, 2004 “Phoenix burned for nothing” was declared the best on the XXI theaters meetings in Brčko, B&H in 2006. „Bride of the rain“ has been awarded a special prize of 25th theater games in Jajce as well. “Ključ tmače” for the best show of B&H production in 2006. The play “Zagrljenici” at the end of season 2006/2007 was named the sixth best in drama festival in Zenica and on 26th theater games in Jajce.
In 2008 the play “God, War and other” was given the Dnevni Avaz plaque for the best achievement in VI Intenational Comedy Festival, Mostar.
