Major Ottoman Attractions

In almost 500 years long history of Ottoman rule of Sarajevo and Bosnia and Herzegovina, there is historically and monumentally important heritage left behind.

Hereby we shall only mention those which are not to be unseen, at any cost while in Sarajevo, and the rest are all around History and Attractions part of VISIT SARAJEVO.

 

Our story begins with founder of Sarajevo, Isa Bey Ishaković, who built the Emperor's Mosque, one of the first, if not the first in Sarajevo.

    The oldest and most beautiful part of old Sarajevo, Baščaršija Square, its sorroundings, and the most beautiful fountain in Sarajevo, Sebilj, are the spots that are must see of every person coming to Sarajevo, no matter what the reasons are.

     

    In Sarajevo you will find dozen of bridges, beautifully arching the river of Miljacka.

    In this section we mention two most famous and important ones from Ottoman period: Latin Bridge, and one similar to one in Mostar, Goat's Bridge.

    Another bazaar on the list, Bursa Bezistan, built in 1551 by Rustem Pasha, Great vizier of Sulejman the Magnificent. Object was used for selling the silk, which was produced by the founder himself in Bursa. Today serves as closed market.

     

    The biggest inn of those times, Morića Han, which once could host 300 people and 70 horses, today serves as national restaurant and carpet market.

    Just couple tenths of meters away from Gazi Husref bey’s Mosque there is another mosque, named Ferhadija Mosque, containing, perhaps the most valuable interior decorations of all mosques in Sarajevo.

     

    Svrzo House was built in 18th century and examples the way of living and architecture of Ottoman Empire in Sarajevo.

     

    On the hills of Old Town of Sarajevo, Baščaršija, you will find couple of fortresses where you have the most beautiful view over Sarajevo.

    White Tabija and Yellow Tabija are, with a little walk and effort, easily reachable.

     

    Story on Ottoman period in Sarajevo wouldn’t be complete if we would not mention one of the oldest and most beautiful old cemeteries in Sarajevo, Alifakovac Cemetery. From this point you have magnificent view over Sarajevo. Like you have it on you palm.
