Čekrekčinica (Čekrekči Muslihudin) Mosque

This, the oldest surviving domed mosque in Sarajevo, was built by Muslihudin hajji Mustafa Čekrekčija in 1526.

The original vakufnama (deed of endowment) of the founder of the mosque has survived, making it the oldest known original such deed written in Sarajevo. According to the deed, Čekrekčija also endowed 45 shops in the Čaršija and the first imam was Hasan, son of Husein.

The shallow dome above the cental prayer area of the mosque belongs to the school of architect Hajrudin. The minaret is set back into the body of the mosque.

The interior of the mosque is painted with geometric and plant designs.

 

The shops sorrounding the mosqe on three sides were added prior to 1851. In the late 1960s and early 1970s structural repairs were carried out to parts of the walls of the mosque, and in 1997-2000 works on the structural repair, reconstruction and restoration of the mosque were carried out.
