There are differing opinions concerning the precise of the church and its development over the centuries. Some authorities date it to the 5th or 6th century, other to the 12th to 14th century, and some deal only with its rebuilding during the Ottoman period in the late 15th or early 16th century.

The church has been damaged by fire on several occasions and subsequently reparired. Its present appearance dates from 1730, following repairs to the damage by fire in 1724. The architectural features of this church it is greater in width than in length, lack a projecting apse, and has a nave surrounded on three sides by a colonnade make it a unique example of well-preserved church architecture in this part of the world.
The most valuable feature of the interior of the church is its carved iconostasis with icons by Master Radula, dating from 1674, Maksim Tujković, dating from 1734, Aleksija Lazović and an anonymous artist dating from the early 19th century. The museum is based on the church treasury.

Opened to the public in 1890, it is one fo the oldest museums in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Its holdings include a collection of icon and old paintings, liturgical ites, articles of metalwork, liturgical fabrics and embroidery, old manuscript and printed books, old documents, and a numismatical and an ethonological collection. The collection of icons and old paintings in one of the finest of its kind in the region, and beyond.
It consists of works by Longin, Maksim Tujković, Jovan Hadži-Petrović and many Cretan, Greek, Russian and western masters. Notable manuscripts and printed ecclesiastical books include the Sarajevo Nomocanon (Canon Law Book), the Gospels of Siloan dating from the 16th century, Theodosius’ Life of St.Sava, transcribed by scribe Vladislav in the 16th century, two Cetinje oktoechoi by Đurđe Crnojević dating from 1493/94, and a Psalter from the Mileševa monastery.
