Church of St.Sava

In 1894 the Serbian Orthodox church and school parish in Blažuj raised 2,382.83 florins to build a church. The funds came from its own revenues, voluntary contributions from the congregation, a donation from the Holy Synod, and borrowed funds.

At the request of the district office, the Provincial Government gave 2,000 florins in 1899 for the iconostasis, and the Metropolitan of Dabro-Bosnia, Đorđe Nikolajević, left a legacy to build a church in the sum of 4,000 florins.

The site on which the church was built was purchased on 8 April 1897.

The church was built to a design by architect August Butch dated 4 June 1896. The fondation stone was laid on St. Peter’s day 1897, and the church was consecrated on 21 September 1897. The ground plan of the church is a freestyle Greek cross.

A dome on a drum was erected over the central crossing. During construction, certain changes were made to the design of the bell tower, which was built without an onion dome. The iconostasis of the church of St.Sava in Blažuj was made in 1920s by an unknown artist.

The western part of the churchyard contains two tombs. Fourteen parishioners executed by firing square in 1914 are buried in the first, and 26 parishioners who suffered the same fate in 1941 are buried in the second. There are three grave sites in the extreme north-east part of the churchyard.

The body of Metropolitan of Dabro-Bosnia, Đorđe Nikolajević, who died in 1896, was transfered from the Koševo cemetery to the church in Blažuj.
