Basketball in Sarajevo

Basketball in Bosnia and Herzegovina is second most important sport. Its arrival to Bosnia and Herzegovina from America happened in 1920, and ever since then it is one of the most popular sports in Sarajevo.


The most famous basketball club in Sarajevo and Bosnia and Herzegovina is KK Bosna.

 

Bosna was founded in 1951. During the first years of existence the club members were mostly students, and club competed in city league. In 1955 the club won Cup of Sarajevo city, and was promoted to higher level, Republic League of Bosnia and Herzegovina.


It took 17 years for club to be promoted to extremely good firs Yugoslavia national league. It happened on 28 of April on 1972, when Bosna in ever-remebering game won against Željezničar.

The major success came with arrival of Bosnia and Herzegovina greatest sportman of all times, Mirza Delibašić Kinđe.

"Kinđe (photo on the left) was born in Tuzla in 9 January of 1954. Shiny carrer started in 1968, when he was a  pioneer champion of Bosnia and Herzegovina in Tennis.

The member of baskeball club Sloboda he became in 1968, and played until 1972, when he moved to KK Bosna.

For Bosna he played 700 games and scored around 14.000 points.

Later Kinđe played in Spain, Real Madrid.

He died in Sarajevo, on 8 December of 2001."


The first shiny season was in 1977/1978 when Bosna won the national Yugoslavia championship, but the major success arrived in 1979, on April 4, when in French Grenbole Bosna won its first and so far only Champion Cup against Italian Emerson, with the result 96:93.

 

 

In the following four years Bosna won two more National championships, in seasons 1979/80 and 1982/1983. Coach in charge was today world famous Bogdan Boša Tanjević.

In year 1980 Bosna won 2nd place on International Cup in Brazil.

Normally when we look at the past, we must say Basketball in Sarajevo was what KK Bosna was, and other clubs such as Željezničar and other have neve make some results worth mentioning.

After the recent Siege of Sarajevo, KK Bosna is competing in Bosnia and Herzegovina championship and is so far one of the most successful clubs.
